Word of the week: curiosity

Speaking various languages is all about being curious. Yes, curiosity does play an important role in learning language. This is the mechanism we develop while learning grammar and doing exercises.

But curiosity also works well when we want to memorize a certain word in our brain. It is key to have more vocabulary. For example, when you travel abroad you are curious to discover new cultures and ways of thinking. Your desire to know more pushes you past limits or fears and make you motivated in your journey. So, learning is more or less like a trip. If you are learning something easy, with a previous background in that experience, it may look like a 1 hour trip. If you want to learn Chinese for example, it will maybe feel like a month trip to another continent. Yet, no matter how difficult the journey is, you know that eventually you will get to that destination you have been dreaming of for all this time.

For example, when you can read fluently in another language or express yourself well according to your needs. For me, this is an instant rewarding of all my learning path and something I will never be enough grateful for.

I read a quote once which said that in twenty years time we will regret more what we have not done than what we actually did. So, we need to take the risk to learn that language, apply for that job, we need to develop our curiosity.

It is a healthy exercise for the brain and we need to keep it up. Like when we were children, nobody told us how to learn, we learnt important things by ourselves like words, with the only motivation of our own inner voice and enthusiasm.Let’s cherish the child inside each and every one of us and keep doing what makes us curious to know more.

Stay safe everyone and I will see you again on Lingueenee, the platform for foreign languages enthusiasts.
